Avoid a Plumbing Disaster This Thanksgiving

Don’t Allow a Plumbing Disaster Ruin Thanksgiving Festivities!

Thanksgiving is a time for the three Fs: Food, Family, and Football. It’s a time for being grateful for the things that make life easier, and a healthy plumbing system is certainly one of those things. Everyone has had to deal with a plumbing emergency, and it’s not fun. Of course, there’s no convenient time for a plumbing emergency, but Thanksgiving is one of the worst times to experience one. Luckily, there are steps homeowners can take to prevent a plumbing emergency this Thanksgiving season. Read on to find out how.

No One Likes a Clogged Toilettoilet

The most common plumbing issue homeowners face is by far a clogged toilet. Unfortunately, there are many different ways that toilets can become clogged. Some are more common than others, but they all result in a big problem, especially if there’s company over. The most common type of clog is one caused by excess toilet paper or non-flushable items. This is easily avoidable by ensuring that all guests know what should and shouldn’t go into the toilet.

Other toilet clogs are caused by older toilets, blocked vents, and an obstruction in the S-trap. Older low-flow toilets often have trouble eliminating waste. The only effective fix for this is to replace the toilet with a newer model that can save water and more efficiently eliminate waste. A blocked vent is a little harder to diagnose and requires that someone get on the roof to inspect the vent for obstructions. One can remedy any obstructions in the toilet’s S-trap with a plumber’s snake or hydro-jetting.

Look Out for Blocked Sewer Lines

In some cases, there could be a blockage further down the line. This is known as a clogged sewer line. This can cause more problems than just a toilet backup. Most of the time, a clogged sewer line causes plumbing issues all over the home. These are rare, but they can happen, usually if something happens and a pipe gets damaged. Pouring grease down the drain can also eventually cause a sewer line clog, as the grease cools and gets stuck to the inside of the piping.

Unfortunately, a sewer line clog usually requires the help of a professional to fix it. Regular household plumbing tactics won’t do the trick, and a professional with the tools and know-how can resolve the issue and get the home back to normal.

Be Thankful for Preventative Maintenanceplumber

One of the best ways to prevent plumbing issues this Thanksgiving is preventive maintenance. When homeowners involve a professional plumber in their household plumbing maintenance, they benefit greatly from that plumber’s expertise. Plumbing maintenance plans include annual inspections that can cover all the plumbing in the house, from the water heater and the sewage system to the showers, sinks, and toilets. It can prevent issues, increase efficiency, and help avoid costly repairs. And that is certainly something to be thankful for!
