Plumbing 101: Tending To Your Pipes Like A Pro

Many people  have no idea how plumbing works. Knowing a few simple tips and tricks can help you keep your money in your hands and not that of a plumber. Sometimes, it is necessary to call up a plumber, but by following a few words of advice, you can take preemptive action and stop a problem before it starts.

Be sure to install screened drain covers in your sinks and bathtubs. These covers will keep the hair from going down the drain and clogging up your lines. It is a very affordable way to prevent your pipes from being clogged and going through the hassle and expense of unclogging them.

Get rid of odors in your waste-disposal unit. In many cases' odors in your waste-disposal unit may not be a sign of a clog, but simply small food particles that have started to rot. Place a combination of lemon peel and ice cubes in the unit, and run it for about a minute. Follow this with a good amount of cold water. If this doesn't help, try a degrease or specialized waste disposal cleaner.

When replacing any PVC type pipes in your home, make sure you buy the correct PVC for the job. PVC comes in several different sizes and grades as well as for different temperature applications. If the water going through the pipes is headed for the kitchen or bathroom, or is for laundry or gardening usage, it must be labeled as "Potable".

Rigid copper is used for main water lines in many homes. You cannot bend rigid copper, so joints and tees must be soldered on. When soldering, always apply flux (also called soldering paste) to both surfaces. Flux retards oxidation when the copper is heated. Always use lead-free or nearly lead-free solder when sweating a copper joint.

Avoid using hard cleaners on your toilets, such as drop-in cleaner tabs in the tank. When these tabs are almost completely dissolved, what's left of the tab gets washed into the bowl. This can then end up clogging the toilet's port holes, preventing the toilet from flushing properly. It can take months for this debris to finish dissolving in those holes.

Unblock your waste disposal unit. Fats, cooking oils, and high fiber food materials can block your disposal system. Reach under the sink, and using an Allen wrench, insert it into the hole at the base of the waste disposal. Turn back and forth until it moves freely. You can then use tongs to remove anything that is clogging the unit.

If you have a crack in your toilet tank, you can sometimes fix this with an epoxy resin.
