Signs That Your Water Heater Needs Maintenance

Does your water heater need maintenance?

Ensuring your water heater is working correctly is an important part of owning one. Without the heater working correctly, you may be doomed with ice cold water when you are in the shower or even using the sink. Very few people know about the common maintenance procedures that can save you time and money when dealing with a water heater. Often overlooked, it can create long term issues with the heater and cause you to spend money that you wouldn’t need to in the first place having the right procedures.

When water is pumped into the heater itself, dirt, sediment, and different forms of minerals are left to settle on the bottom of the heater. This can cause issues with buildup and create more issues that will result in your water heater being much less efficient. If you leave this kind of problem unchecked, it can render your heater useless and create many problems in the long run that shouldn’t have been there in the first place. This will cause you to replace the entire unit itself, resulting in money being spent that didn’t have to be spent in the first place.

Before performing maintenance, locate your water heater and determine if it is gas or electric. You must make sure that you turn off the heating source and gather supplies for the work you are about to do. You will need a hose, bucket, and gloves to protect you from scalding water. You can then turn off the water and attach the hose to the heater itself. After this, you can turn on the water drain and then open the pressure release valve.

This will result in you draining your water heater of all the nasty dirt, sediment and various minerals that may buildup within the heater. You should wait 10-30 minutes to allow all of the water to drain out. When this is done, you should turn on the water to flush the rest of the sediment out of the system. Finally, refill the water heater and you are good to go. Overall, this process can save you a lot of time and money, possibly even another investment in another water heater.
