Why is it taking so long for the water in my home to heat up?

Signs Your Water Heater Needs Maintenance

Advanced technology has enabled quality water heaters to remain in excellent operational condition, for ten to fifteen years, before they may need repair or replacement. Hot water heaters are very reliable, but like all home appliances, they can eventually develop problems.

However, when certain conditions occur within and around a water heater, these are signs your water heater needs maintenance. Older water heaters can become encased in minerals or deposits, that buildup over time, which can cause parts to corrode within the heater. This corrosion can be detected through the hot water that comes from the faucet.

If your hot water consistently appears rust colored or cloudy, there is a water heater problem. Water discoloration can be a sign of calcium and magnesium deposits, that have accumulated within the bottom of the tank. If it doesn't clear up after 24 hours, a call to a local technician will be needed, because they will need to drain and flush the hot water heater fixtures.

If the water heater begins to make noises, like pops, cracking sounds, or unexplained groans, the heater is telling you that there is a problem within the heating elements. Heating elements for hot water heaters can also be affected by the buildup of minerals. If this is not attended to immediately, this is a symptom for leaks or a flood, that is waiting to happen.

Inconsistent changes in water temperatures is also a sign, that hot water heaters are having trouble producing the normal amount of hot or cold water. This is usually a sign, to call a plumbing technician for repairs, which might involve cleaning out deposits that may have built up.

A visible sign that a hot water heater needs maintenance, is leaking water settling around the tank. This is a clear sign that the water tank has an internal problem. However, with this sign, homeowner's should not touch the heater, nor use any water until a professional plumber has inspected the hot water heater. Puddles of water near and around the water heater could be a temperature relief valve problem or worn parts, pipe fittings, etc., that only a professional plumbing technician can detect.
