Why You Should Avoid Using Chemical Drain Cleaners

Do you need your drains cleaned?

Chemical drain cleaners come in a variety of different mediums and each works a little differently in how they manage to unclog drains. The four main types of cleaners are acids, oxidizers, caustics, and enzymatic. Acidic type cleaners work by a chemical reaction that causes an increase in hydronium ions along with heat that helps break down the material in the pipes. Oxidizers cause organic material to oxidize and become heavier than water which allows them to move easier through pipes. Caustic agents work similar to acidic agents except they cause an increase in hydroxide ions and convert grease into a more water-soluble solution that aids in its movement through the pipes. Lastly, enzymatic cleaners use biologic compounds to "metabolize" the clogging material and break it down.

Chemical drain cleaners are thought to be cost effective cleaners that are easy to use without the need for outside help. However, there are plenty of disadvantages to these agents as well. Simply based on how they work, choosing the proper chemical drain cleaning solution can be tricky. Most chemical drain cleaners generate heat which can damage the plumbing. It is more common in older plumbing systems and can be avoided if the instructions are followed properly.

Chemical drain cleaners produce noxious fumes and ventilation is necessary to avoid harmful exposure to them. Extremely dangerous fumes can be created if you mix different chemical drain cleaners with each other or if you mix the drain cleaners with other cleaning chemicals. Most chemical drain cleaners are toxic if swallowed and can cause burning of the eyes and skin through contact. Some cleaners can even eat through clothing or permanently damage fixtures. Only certain chemical drain cleaners can be used with some systems like septic systems and if used improperly, can cause a significant amount of damage that leads to major financial concerns.

There are other options for removing clogs from drains that do not put your health and home in jeopardy. If you are unable to avoid using chemical drain cleaners, then be sure to read all instructions and follow them carefully to avoid creating harmful situations for you and your household.
